Dr. Lloyd R. Sutherland was born in Woodstock, New Brunswick and educated at the University of New Brunswick (BA, 1969), McGill (MD, 1973) and the University of Toronto (FRCPC, 1978). He is Board-certified and was elected a Fellow of the American College of Physicians in 1985.

While a scholar in the Intestinal Disease Research Unit at the University from 1986-1989, he obtained his MSc (Epidemiology). He became Head of the Division of Gastroenterology in 1991.

He served as Head of the Department of Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary and Director of the Centre for the Advancement of Health at the Calgary Health Region from 1995-2002. He was Founding Director for the Centre for Health and Policy Studies (CHAPS) from 1999-2001. He is presently Professor in the Department of Medicine (since 1992) and Director of the Heritage Medical Research Clinic (since 1988).

A former member of the editorial board of Gastroenterology and Section Editor of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases, Dr. Sutherland is currently Editor-in-Chief of the Canadian Journal of Gastroenterology. He served as Scientific Secretary of the International Organization for the Study of Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IOIBD) from 1994-2000.

Dr. Sutherland is the 2003 recipient of the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of Canada’s Finkelstein Prize, given for outstanding contribution in the field of inflammatory bowel disease.

His publications include over 200 peer-reviewed papers and abstracts. He is also Senior Co-Editor (along with Professor Jack Satsangi) of Inflammatory Bowel Diseases (1st Edition), published by Elsevier, Churchill Livingstone.

He is President and Chief Executive Officer of the Lloyd Sutherland Group, the world’s first drug development company emphasizing methodological excellence in evaluation for that portion of the pharmaceutical industry focusing on inflammatory bowel and other gastrointestinal diseases.
